This page will be dedicated to my close turkey hunting pals and serve as a diary of our quest for the turkey hunting world slam. The world slam is
when a turkey hunter harvests all six wild turkey subspecies they include:

Rio Grande (Meleagris gallopavo intermedia): This turkey is found throughout the west and parts of Mexico.

Eastern (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris): The most abundant and largest turkey found throughout the eastern United States. The Eastern
turkey is being planted in some western (Northern California) states and seems to be doing well in those states.

Merriam's  (Meleagris gallopavo merriami): This turkey is found throughout the west and lives in the higher elevations. In my opinion this
turkey is truly the prettiest of all the turkey subspecies.

Osceola (Meleagris gallopavo osceola): This turkey is only found in the swamps and flat lands of Northern Florida.

Spring 2006: Barry on an Osceola hunt in the Florida Swamp. One step closer to the World Slam.

Gould's (Meleagris gallopavo mexicana):
This turkey is found in northern Mexico and parts of Arizona and New Mexico. There is only around
1000 wild Gould's turkeys left in the world. The population remains stable and at huntable numbers thanks to extensive management practices.
We will be hunting the Gould's in the spring of 2007 stay tuned.

Ocellated (Meleagris ocellata): This turkey is found on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico and parts of Guatemala. This small beardless turkey
make up for it with extremely long spurs that sometimes surpass 2 inches.

Stay tuned for our updated diary while we hunt each of these subspecies.
